Preserving Filipino Culture, Stories, and Traditions in the Interlake

The is proud to explore the vision of creating a Filipino Section within the Heritage Village — a space dedicated to celebrating and preserving Filipino culture, history, traditions, and contributions to the community.

As more Filipino families continue to build their lives in the Interlake region, we believe it is important to create a cultural space where future generations can learn about their roots while also sharing the richness of Filipino heritage with the wider community.

A Place to Celebrate Filipino Identity

The Filipino Heritage Village Section aims to become an interactive and educational cultural exhibit that showcases the beauty, resilience, and creativity of the Filipino people.

Through carefully curated displays and experiences, visitors will be able to explore Filipino life, traditions, and history through:

  • Dioramas and historical displays

  • Traditional clothing and textiles

  • Filipino art forms and crafts

  • Indigenous and regional cultural elements

  • Historical photos and family stories

  • Music and instruments

  • Traditional household items and tools

  • Agricultural and fishing heritage

  • Community migration stories

  • Festivals and celebrations

Bringing Filipino History to Life

One of the goals of the exhibit is to present Filipino culture in a visual and engaging way for all ages.

Possible features may include:

  • Miniature dioramas of traditional Filipino homes and villages

  • Displays representing life in different regions of the Philippines

  • Historical exhibits showing Filipino migration and settlement in Manitoba

  • Traditional cooking and food culture displays

  • Interactive storytelling and educational materials

  • Seasonal cultural demonstrations and performances

These exhibits will help preserve stories and traditions that may otherwise be forgotten over time.

Showcasing Filipino Creativity & Art

The Filipino community is rich in artistic talent and craftsmanship. The Heritage Village Section hopes to feature:

  • Paintings and visual arts

  • Handmade crafts and weaving

  • Cultural decorations

  • Indigenous-inspired art

  • Traditional attire such as barong and Filipiniana

  • Music, dance, and performance arts

This initiative will also create opportunities for local Filipino artists, creators, performers, and youth to contribute and showcase their talents.

A Community Effort

This vision can only become possible through collaboration and bayanihan.

We hope to work together with:

  • Local families

  • Historians and cultural advocates

  • Artists and performers

  • Community volunteers

  • Schools and organizations

  • Businesses and sponsors

We also welcome donations or loans of Filipino artifacts, historical items, photos, and cultural materials that can help bring this project to life.

Preserving Culture for Future Generations

For many Filipino children growing up in Canada, cultural connection is important in understanding identity, family history, and heritage. This project aims to create a meaningful space where younger generations can learn about Filipino traditions with pride.

At the same time, the exhibit will also allow visitors from all backgrounds to experience and appreciate Filipino culture in a welcoming and educational environment.

Looking Toward the Future

The Filipino Heritage Village Section represents more than a cultural display — it represents community, identity, and belonging.

It is a celebration of the Filipino journey, the sacrifices of families, the strength of immigrants, and the shared spirit of bayanihan that continues to unite communities both in the Philippines and here in Manitoba.

Together, we hope to build a space that honors the past, celebrates the present, and inspires future generations.
