Helping Families Feel Welcome in the Interlake Community

Moving to a new country or community can be both exciting and challenging. Through the Newcomers Support Program, we aim to help Filipino newcomers and their families feel welcomed, supported, and connected as they begin building their lives in the Interlake region.

Guided by the spirit of bayanihan, this program focuses on creating a caring community where newcomers can find friendship, guidance, and practical support during their transition to life in Manitoba.

Supporting New Families & Individuals

Starting over in a new place often comes with many adjustments — from finding housing and employment to understanding schools, transportation, healthcare, and community resources.

Our program aims to help newcomers by:

  • Providing community connections and support

  • Helping families feel welcomed and included

  • Sharing local information and resources

  • Encouraging cultural connection and belonging

  • Promoting volunteerism and community participation

Welcome Box Initiative

One of the goals of the program is to provide Welcome Boxes for newcomers and families arriving in the community.

These welcome packages may include:

  • Basic household or hygiene items

  • Snacks and small essentials

  • Local community information

  • School and settlement resources

  • Winter preparation tips

  • Community event information

  • Donation items from local businesses and supporters

The purpose is to help newcomers feel supported and welcomed during their first days and weeks in the community.

Community Connection & Mentorship

Adjusting to a new environment becomes easier when people feel connected.

The program hopes to encourage:

  • Peer support and mentorship

  • Family connections

  • Volunteer opportunities

  • Social and cultural gatherings

  • Community introductions and networking

We want newcomers to know they are not alone and that there is a community ready to support them.

Supporting Youth & Families

The transition to a new country can be especially difficult for children and youth. Through community programs and activities, we hope to help younger newcomers:

  • Build friendships

  • Participate in community events

  • Stay connected to Filipino culture and traditions

  • Gain confidence and belonging in their new environment

Working Together With the Community

The Newcomers Support Program will continue to grow through partnerships and collaboration with:

  • Local volunteers

  • Schools and educators

  • Community organizations

  • Businesses and sponsors

  • Settlement and support services

We also welcome donations and contributions that can help support newcomer families and future community initiatives.

Building a Home Away From Home

For many Filipino families, Manitoba becomes a place where dreams, sacrifices, and opportunities come together. Our goal is to help create a welcoming environment where newcomers can feel safe, valued, and connected while building a brighter future for themselves and their families.

At IFC Manitoba, we believe that even small acts of kindness can make a lasting difference.

Together, we can continue building a stronger, more compassionate, and more connected community for everyone.
