From Christmas Party to Year-End Celebration: Honouring Our Diverse Community Together

For many years, Christmas gatherings have been a meaningful way for Filipino communities to come together—sharing food, laughter, and familiar traditions that remind us of home. These celebrations have helped keep us connected as we built our lives here in Canada.
As the Filipino community in the Interlake continues to grow, so does our diversity. Today, our community includes people of different faiths, beliefs, and traditions. While many celebrate Christmas, others observe different holidays—or none at all. All identities matter, and everyone belongs.
With this in mind, we are excited to share a thoughtful and inclusive shift in how we celebrate the season.
Why a Year-End Party?
Moving forward, our community gathering will be known as a Year-End Party rather than a Christmas party. This change allows us to create a celebration where everyone feels welcome and included, regardless of religion or belief, while still keeping the joy, warmth, and togetherness that Filipino gatherings are known for.
The Year-End Party allows us to:
Celebrate the year we shared as a community
Reflect on milestones, growth, and shared memories
Express gratitude to one another
Welcome new members and friendships
Look ahead with hope for the coming year
This is not about removing tradition—it is about expanding it, so the celebration truly reflects who we are today.
Filipino Community Awards
As part of our Year-End Party, we are proud to present the Filipino Community Awards, created to honour seniors, elders, and community members whose service and contributions have made a lasting impact.
Awards that may be presented include:
Gawad Haligi ng Pamayanan – the highest honour for lifelong contribution to the community
Gawad Bayanihan – recognizing community spirit and volunteerism
Gawad Paglilingkod – dedicated service to individuals or organizations
Gawad Inspirasyon – inspiring leadership or mentorship
Gawad Pamana – preservation of Filipino culture, traditions, and values
These awards celebrate Filipino values such as bayanihan, service, leadership, and legacy, while preserving stories that inspire future generations Filipino Community Awards.
Volunteer Recognition Awards
In addition to community awards, the Year-End Party will also include Volunteer Recognition Awards to honour those who generously gave their time, skills, and effort throughout the year.
Volunteer recognition may include:
Certificates of appreciation
Special recognition for volunteers who reached service milestones (Tracked Hours)
Leadership acknowledgment for Team Leads and coordinators
These recognitions are our way of saying maraming salamat to the people who work behind the scenes and help bring our events and initiatives to life.

At the heart of this celebration is pakikipagkapwa—recognizing our shared humanity and caring for one another.
We look forward to celebrating the year together in a way that reflects who we are: diverse, inclusive, grateful, and united as one community.
